Activities Calendar
Sunday with a Scientist
Hands-on science for everyone
Meet a different scientist each month to learn about topics and careers in science. Scientists will share what they study in a fun, informal way through hands-on activities, demonstrations, and conversation.
Big Ideas Come in Really Small Packages!
with Nebraska's EQUATE team of quantum and nano scientists
Sunday, November 17th 12:00pm-3:00pm
Included with admission; FREE for members
If you've seen a Marvel movie, you've heard the words quantum and nanoscience — but what do these mean? Quantum and nanoscientists work at a super-small scale, like one-billionth-of-a-meter small! At this tiny scale, materials behave in ways that are totally different from our “big” world, with effects that can be huge!
Quantum and nanoscience span a bunch of disciplines! Chemists can make materials that store data, making laptops or phones smaller and lighter. Materials engineers can create surfaces with amazing properties, while computer and electrical engineers work on building and programming quantum computers. That’s a lot of people working on things so tiny that we can’t even see them with our eyes!
Join Nebraska’s EQUATE team on November 17th at Morrill Hall to meet real-life quantum and nanoscientists in person! You’ll learn about the chemistry of Harry Potter, see what magnets and magnetic fields can do, and use static electricity to light up bulbs through hands-on activities!
